When I missed the easy layup, my head went down. It was an automatic reaction, embarassment...hide your face. She came over to me and asked me a question, not what I expected, she said "why do you play basketball?" I thought and simply said "I love the game" her reply was again, not what I expected she said, "so why not just sit and watch the game like millions of other fans?" I was literally speechless, I just said "Because I love playing the game?" and she smiled and said "then play"
for the rest of the practice I couldn't get her question out of my head, so I thought of all the reasons I play. I knew it wasn't because it was always easy or even fun, too many nights I had gone home in tears. It wasn't to get my name in the paper, quite frankly I'll never be high scorer.
It was the...
-the competition
-the sound of the ball hitting the court
-the teammates, my friends
-the coaches
-the sweat
-the desire to prove that I could
-the getting into your car after a practice and not being able to move because your body is so tried from giving everything you had out on that court
-the sound of a ball going through the net
-the pushing and shoving
-the bruises after a game
-the prooving people wrong
-the waking up on a saturday morning to go play ball with my team
-the way the ball feels in your hands
There are so many more reasons why I love to play, but mostly it is just because I love the game, and that is something that NO ONE can take from me
